Intaglio Etching
My MFA degree is in Intaglio Etching, which is the old Rembrandt style of drawing on a metal plate and pulling multiple prints. I start by scratching away my drawing in a wax substance that is protecting the surface of a zinc plate. I use a metal stylus to create the drawing and reveal the metal below the wax. I then submerge the plate in nitric acid so the drawing becomes etched into the plate. I then rub ink into the recessed drawing and run it through a press to transfer the image from metal to paper.
